Multi-Test Versatility

The IT406 and IT542 provide maximum testing versatility. Easy insertion of interchangeable striking bits in the pendulum head quickly adapts the machine for either Charpy or Izod testing. A notch is provided in the rear of the head to accommodate optional tooling for Tension Impact tests, as well.

Transverse and longitudinal leveling surfaces are incorporated in the base. These provide a positive reference for accurate alignment of the machine to within 3:1 000, as cited in ASTM E 23. A safety lock latching mechanism holds the pendulum in its raised position, and assures vibration-free pendulum release when activated. The pendulum attains a striking velocity of 17.9 feet per second (5.47 m/s). The maximum capacity of the IT406 is 406J (300 ft-lbf), and the maximum capacity of the IT542 is 542 J (400 ft-lbf).

Direct indication of the energy absorbed by the specimen in ft-lbf is given on the analog scale, which is graduated as follows: 0 to 30 ft-lbf, 0.5 ft-lbf divisions; 30 to 120 ft-lbf, 1.0 ft-lbf divisions; 120 to 300 ft-lbf, 2.0 ft-lbf divisions. Metric scales are also available. The machines can also be furnished with a digital display with which energy can be resolved to 0.1 ft-lbf (0.14 J).
