Tinius Olsen Returns to the Front Lines with
Tensile Testing System for Terma’s Weapons System
Tinius Olsen recently supplied a 5 kN (1,000 lbf) tensile testing system to Terma (Lystrup, Denmark) for verifying the robustness of components and connectors in a newly developed Electronic Warfare Management System (EWMS). Terma’s EWMS gathers, processes, and presents information in a single coherent system and replaces individual control panels and indicators for Electronic Warfare (EW), such as the dispenser, jammer, radar warning, and missile warning units. Because the display and management unit is housed in a central location, within the pilot’s field of vision and reach, Terma placed significant emphasis on designing an optimal Pilot-Vehicle Interface (PVI).
In each case the Terma system is customized to match the specific configuration of the aircraft and its mode of operation, since the pilot himself may configure the system to fulfill mission requirements. The system contains a database with predefined rules of threats and responses to assist the pilot in his decision-making process. Finally, the system allows recording and exchange of data with other aircraft and operation centers using either data cartridges or available data links.
The Terma system is flexible and independent of individual subsystems and also interoperates with all existing subsystems. The Terma system can be integrated into any type of aircraft, be it a fighter, helicopter, or a transport aircraft, and can operate in manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic modes; it is critical, therefore, for a solid design and robust manufacture so that the flexibility is maintained.
