Tinius Olsen Helps Oil Industry Supplier Meet Rising DemandA manufacturing company supplying the oil industry is attributing a key part of its success to materials testing equipment supplied by Tinius Olsen. American-based Norris Sucker Rods of Tulsa, Oklahoma, manufactures the connecting (‘sucker’) rods that operate pumps at the bottom of oil wells. A rigorous quality testing policy using Tinius Olsen equipment means the company is the only manufacturer of its kind in the world able to offer a two-year guarantee on its products. Breakages in sucker rods cause serious financial loss to oil producers so, as demand for production has increased, Norris is enjoying an upturn in orders due to the guaranteed reliability of its products. The company is now at maximum production, which requires testing of well over 500 batch samples a month. "Wells can range from 2,500 feet to over 5 miles in depth," says quality assurance manager Leon Cox. "So the rods must be able to withstand loads of up to 180,000lbs (81 tonnes) to deal with the constant tension/compression stresses imposed." Samples from every batch of rods made are tested before and after heat treatment using the Tinius Olsen equipment. "The Super L test machine and its Navigator computer software enable me to provide a complete sample analysis document to visiting customers within minutes of a test being performed," says Mr Cox. "We use Tinius Olsen because of the dependability of the equipment and the excellent service and support from the company," he adds. - Ends -
